Living the Van Life: How to Know If Something is for You
Today, as I sit on my deck surrounded by nature’s beauty, I want to share some thoughts on a question that I think everyone faces at some point: how do you know if something is truly for you?
Whether it's a lifestyle change like deciding to live the van life (like me!), a career move, or even a relationship, figuring this out can bring clarity and peace to your life.
I’m currently parked at a charming little pull-off spot with a couple of picnic tables and a grill—perfect for an impromptu outdoor cooking session. As I’m preparing my meal, the words “I am for you,” which I have on a magnet in my van, come to mind.
These words have resonated with me in a profound way. For much of my life, I’ve spent time identifying what I’m against, which is natural, but it led me to question: what do I actually stand for?
That shift in perspective—towards focusing on what is good, right, true, and beautiful — has been a guiding force in my journey, including my choice to live on the road.
1. Clarity and alignment: signs something is for you
As I chop up some veggies, there’s a certain peacefulness that accompanies the simple act of cooking.
There’s a rhythm to it, a groundedness that feels just right, and I think that’s a clue when something is for you: it brings a sense of clarity and alignment rather than chaos and confusion.
In my own experience, van life became an idea that brought me incredible clarity. At a time when there was a lot of confusion in my life, I began seeking out activities and lifestyles that brought me joy.
That’s when van life started popping up on my radar. I didn’t jump straight into it; I started small by camping in my SUV, and I loved it.
This led me to consider getting a van, which eventually happened naturally. Every step I took towards this lifestyle felt aligned, as if it were the logical next step for me.
2. When things come naturally
Another important way to know if something is for you is if it comes easily — not without effort, but without constant struggle or the need to convince yourself or others. When something is right for you, it often just falls into place.
That doesn’t mean you won’t have to work hard, but the path forward will feel natural and not forced. In my case, this is how van life evolved.
It just made sense for where I was in my life, and everything I needed seemed to come together almost effortlessly.
3. Peaceful and grounded
Living in my van also brings me a deep sense of peace and safety. It’s the only home I’ve built and owned on my own, and though it might seem odd or even unsafe to some, for me, it’s a haven.
When something is for you, it should feel grounding and secure, like a place or situation where you can truly be yourself.
4. Knowing your worth
A huge realization I’ve had is that when something is genuinely for you, it won’t make you question your worth.
It’s so important to surround yourself with people and situations that affirm your worth and don’t make you feel like you have to prove yourself. You are inherently worthy, and you should never have to question that.
5. Healthy and supportive relationships
Finally, when something is for you, it will feel healthy and supportive, not toxic or destructive. This might be more relevant when thinking about people, but it applies to all areas of life.
The people in my life now are supportive, positive, and emotionally healthy, and that makes all the difference. It reinforces that van life — and the community I’ve found within i t— is truly for me.
How to know if something is for you
As I wrap up my meal and this reflection, I want you to remember that I am for you. I hope these thoughts help you as you navigate your own journey.
