The 5 Most Common Full-Time RVing Questions & Answers

As a couple that is living in an RV full time, we have been hearing some assumptions or misconceptions we would like to address, as well as questions we would like to answer. Here are our RV questions and answers for those who are curious about how to live in an RV. Let’s get started!

How to live in an RV

1. How expensive is your RV?

Some people assume that because we live in an RV, we are filthy rich. They also think our RV costs around a million dollars. Neither of these is at all true. We are normal people who have prioritized this lifestyle over a stationary lifestyle in a house because we love to travel.

We spent on a motorhome roughly what we would have spent on a house. That thing was not cheap. It was about a quarter of the way to a million dollars. It is not a cheap RV by any stretch, and it is our third.

We have worked our way up to know what we wanted and what we needed for our big family. Actually, when we were shopping for our very first RV, we had a lot more money, but it was around $40,000. The truck we got was used, and we bought it for $18,000.

2. How did you come to live in an RV full-time?

We were trying to spend as little as possible to get out on the road because we were not going to be on the road for more than a year: we were actually shopping for somewhere else to live as we traveled around.

We did not work the first year around. We sold the house that we lived in, and we lived off that until that ran out. That is why we went to Colorado Springs and stayed there for a year working, but we soon realized that we needed to get back on the road because of two things: the horrible weather and being 30 hours away from everybody we loved.

Therefore, we started working remotely, and we have been on the road since July 2020. Aaron does real estate, I substitute teach, and we do YouTube. So we are definitely not rich at all.

3. Why did you decide to live in an RV?

Being able to travel around is a priority for us, and that is very hard to do when your house does not have wheels: you have to fly, board the dog, load up suitcases, impose on people and stay in their houses or spend a lot of money on hotels. This is how we discovered that RVing is our jam.

4. Why did you upgrade your RV?

Once we had some experience traveling and living in the less expensive motorhome, we knew what amenities we wanted, so we were able to find the RV that would fit all of our needs. Our biggest need was more space for the kids, and we also wanted a Jeep instead of a truck.

Our current RV is, once again, expensive. It is more than any mortgage we have had, but it is worth it because this is what we need.

What does full-time RV life look like?

5. What does RV life look like?

We have traveled around the country several times; we have been to 48 states and seen amazing, beautiful places. However, it is important to remember that this is the minority of RV lifetime.

Full-time RV life is so much more: it is working, doing laundry, grocery shopping, working on repairs, fixing flat tires, changing batteries, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of sick children. When your living space is tiny and you are all on top of each other, all of it is harder. All those things that you do every day in a regular house, we probably do in our RV.

Of course, you have to add on a lot of the RV headaches. Every time we move, I have to hook up a bunch of stuff and unhook a bunch of stuff. There is more day-to-day maintenance that you do not have to do in a house. Finally, we also have to plan our route.
