Cheap Meals Around the World: Easy Bangers & Mash Recipe
I am in a little bit of a cooking rut, so I’m challenging myself to cook meals from around the world. This time, it’s England! Let’s see what British food I can come up with for cheap. I’m going to see how cheaply I can get the ingredients and cook up an easy bangers-and-mash recipe.
How will this cheap and traditional English meal taste on a budget? I spent about $12 on this meal. This is my take on bangers and mash, and I’m sure it’s not authentic, but let's get cooking!
Ingredients:
- 4 Russet potatoes
- Yellow onion
- Brown gravy mix
- Sausages/bratwurst
1. Peel and prep potatoes
Dice potatoes. Put them in a pot of water. Add salt and pepper to season.
2. Saute onion
Cut the onion and saute in olive oil until they caramelize.
3. Prep the brats
Take a toothpick and pierce the sausages so that the sausages do not burst. Sear them in the skillet in olive oil.
4. Heat sausages through
Cook the sausages in the pot until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. Make gravy
Take the sausages out of the pan and set them aside. Make the gravy in the same pan along with the sausage drippings. Keep stirring until the gravy comes together.
6. Add in onions
Add back the onions to the gravy.
7. Mash potatoes
Add salt, butter, and milk, and mash up the potatoes.

When in England I tasted their sausage, not so good! Not what we’re used to here in the states. I would imagine the brats would be much better in this dish.
Got to have mushy peas with this dish - a must! However, here in Australia we don't need to prick the sausages, they are just fine with the normal frypan cooking, and they never burst.
