How to Makeover a Closet Office to Make It Cute & Cozy

I can’t wait to show you guys the amazing closet office I made in my home. Strangely, I love to work in a dark, confined space. That's why I am a big fan of turning closets into offices. When I moved into this apartment, I was very excited to turn this closet into a tiny office.

Closet office before the makeover

I have been using this as the go-to place to store all my junk like decor, miscellaneous items, and returns. Everything piled up and I felt like it was too much. I’m going to clean it up, make it over, give it a refresh, and make it feel like a really nice, cozy place to sit and work.

I already added this peel-and-stick wallpaper. I also already arrange my books by color. I'm one of those people. Everything else has been cleared out.

DIY closet office

To start, I'm going to sweep and steam up the floor. This closet office is small, but it does have some interesting features, such as this built-in bookcase.

I would have not chosen to put a built-in here because it makes the space even smaller, but it is closed storage. It’s always nice to have some closed storage, especially if you need a place to hide all your junk.

If you're a renter, just buy a million command hooks and a million stickies. It's just one of those things that makes life so much easier.

My vision for this office is for it to be a nice, cozy retreat where I could wake up every morning, put on some essential oils, journal and get to know myself. Instead, I trip over my cat and I TikTok the morning away.

Cozy rug

I wanted to really amp up those cozy vibes, so I wanted to bring in a rug. I got this rug for $14. I did decide to go with this because it was fairly low cost. I am often barefoot when I enter this office so a nice plush rug was important to me.

I got a rug pad to go under it. I also bought two other rugs just in case to compare. I’m going to normalize buying multiple rugs and returning them later. This is the first time I've ever bought a rug pad in my life. I guess I’m growing up and making better choices.

Office closet organization ideas

Even though I found the perfect size desk, tragedy had to strike. My cat knocked over some essential oils which then pooled around a weird candle holder I had on the desk. The paint got stripped off and left this huge stain. I'm going to wipe it down and put contact paper over it. I'm a contact paper lover.

Another problem I have had in this room is that the desk is small. I needed things like pens and markers and a lot of other stuff that I wanted to be left out for easy access. The desk was way too cluttered, but I didn't want to put shelves around it because that would only make it feel more boxed in.

DIY wire frame hanging shelves

I decided to use this unused wall space to hang some shelves and put stuff there for easy access. I found these two little wire frame hanging shelves with fake marble contact paper. They are the perfect dimensions to put on that wall.

DIY wicker basket light

Another problem I have in this office is lighting. Ideally, I would have ambient light in addition to the overhead light. The issue is the surface of the deck is so small that I can’t have a desk light.

Then I remembered something I picked up on a recent trip to the thrift store. I got a pendant light and a wicker basket and turned them into a hanging lamp that is perfect for this space.

Closet to office makeover

We have our light, we have our rug, we have our desk, and things are really coming along, but every office needs a chair. Office chairs are either really large, ugly but comfortable, or they're very cute and chic, but completely uncomfortable.

I wanted something that was cute, and cozy, but most of all I wanted a chair that could actually fit through the door. I finally found a peachy pink, coral velvet chair.

Now it’s time to do a little styling. I have a cute little plant that is in a planter that perfectly matches my chair. I also thrifted this little opalescent shell recently. I don't know why. I'm very into shell shapes.

Then I have what is actually a scarf that is framed, to decorate the walls. I’m really into grandma chic right now.

Decorating with contact paper

We all need a place to put, like, papers and files and things like that. I picked up this mailbox-looking thing, but the colors do not work with the rest of the office.

This is why I love contact paper. It’s so easy to use and you can restyle anything so quickly. I put two extra-large velcro stickies on the back of it and I just stuck it to the wall.

Bulletin board

I'm also putting this bulletin board on the wall on the side that people don't see from outside the office. Just in case I want to keep my ideas private, I don’t want it on display for anyone to walk past and see. I can’t have everyone know what sort of schemes I’m plotting.

Yes! Where do you plug in your hanging lamp? I’ve used a light fixture that allows you to use exiting socket to add a bulb and plugs. Comes in handy when hanging lights outside with easy plug in to the existing front porch light. Flip a switch and it’s on!
