How to Decorate on a Budget With Thrift Store Finds
Do you love shopping at the thrift store for vintage finds? Wait until you see what I found thrifting at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. And while I was poking around, I found something super cool for my plants too!
Whether shopping for a home or garden, you can find the best deals at the thrift store, flea market and garage sales.
With our new home, we are on the hunt for some unique pieces to decorate several rooms.
It makes sense to thrift for items instead of buying new because you can find really cool things, that are made really well, that just need some sprucing up.
This weekend, we decided to visit the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Manville, New Jersey to search for cabinets to hold my dinnerware.
One would think my china cabinet and hutch would be enough to hold all of my dinnerware.
And to some extent, it is.
But I have a bunch of table decor items that need more storage.
I’ve got a small wall in my dining room that I’m thinking about getting something to hold my linens.
But I also have space in the front entry hall, which is directly adjacent to the dining room that can house a few pieces.
I’m not really sure what I’m looking for exactly, but I’ll know it when I see it.

I’ve been bringing you guys along on my thrifting adventures for the last year.
And some of you wanted to know pricing on the finds.
So today, I’m sharing the pieces I found and what they are selling for to give you an idea of the deals to be had.
Admittedly, it’s easier to hop online and decorate a room with the click of a mouse.
But there’s something to be said for taking your time, letting a space marinate and finding budget-friendly unique pieces to decorate your home.
Oh and while we were shopping around for the dining room, we happened upon a cool find that I’ve said in the past I wanted to use as a planter.
Can you guess what it is?
I’m sharing it at the end of this post.
Anyway, let me show you the deals I found for the dining room and more.
Thrift Store Dining Room Storage Ideas
Have you ever been to a Habitat for Humanity Restore before?
In the times I’ve visited, they have a lot of cool furniture options.
As I walked through the Restore in Manville, New Jersey, they had several china cabinet options.
Since I already have a large china cabinet and hutch, I’m not really looking for that.
I want more of a buffet or low-boy type storage cabinet and maybe a small vintage dresser for my table linens.
But just to give you an idea of how much money you can save, check these out!
For the price, it pays to refinish them with chalk paint like I did HERE.
Or refinish them with Fusion Mineral Paint like I did HERE.
Either way, think about much these pieces would cost brand new.
And they probably wouldn’t be as unique or made as well either.
Finding wood pieces with these kind of details look so good and have so much character after refinishing it.
Especially if you antique it by lightly distressing the edges like I did HERE or using a glaze like did on THIS project.
I know sometimes it’s hard to visualize what something will look like after it’s painted, but trust me, just because something looks dark and dingy, doesn’t mean you can’t give it a new life!
Similar to the sunroom I just made over, look past what it looks like in its current state and try to think how it will look lightened up.
You can strip wood pieces using THIS like I did for my coffee table makeover.
And lately, I’ve seen bloggers use Easy Off spray to strip wood furniture that looks really pretty when finished.
If you don’t want to go through the hassle of stripping a piece?
Use chalk paint, milk paint or Fusion Mineral paint because you can do a lot less prep work that way.
Regardless of the refinishing method you use, the point is, you can purchase an awesome, unique piece for a song!

I really like this buffet and seriously considered it for the price.
I mean, $35!
But I want a piece with a little more detail.
So I’m going to keep looking.
If it’s still there when I go back, maybe it’s a sign?
More Great Thrift Shop Finds for My Garden and Home!
Although we came up short on the cabinet, Chris and I poked around to see what else this Restore had.
I found these gorgeous oversized amaryllis prints for $50.
You know how I love my amaryllis!
I considered painting the frames and antiquing them, but don’t really have the right spot for it.
But I also found lots of pretty dinnerware that would work well for a few supper club themes I have coming up.
Isn’t it so pretty?
I love that pattern.
Since I need lighting for my home, I carefully perused the lamp aisle to see if I could find something that resembled pottery.
Even if it was actually pottery, I could refinish something to make it look like it’s pottery.
I found a few pieces I liked, but didn’t buy anything.
But OMG.
Do you remember when I mentioned that I wanted THIS vintage stroller to pot up and my husband didn’t want it?
Well, he thought differently when we saw this vintage doll stroller for $30.
It looks so much like the one we saw in Vermont not too long ago.
And it is PERFECT for my home.
So we bought it and it’s currently sitting on my front porch waiting for the right plants.
