How to Make Your Patio Look Expensive on a Budget
DIY design expert Lisa Burningham shows you how to turn your yard into an inexpensive outdoor oasis that looks high-end. Here are 10 cheap ways to make your outdoor patio look expensive. Here are 10 tips:
1. Tablescape
Clean up the table and prep it for placemats, a runner, and summery place settings.
2. Conversation areas
Add comfortable, smaller spots around your outdoor space in addition to the dining table.
3. Fire elements
A cozy, glowing fire element, such as a fire pit or fireplace, adds warmth to the area to extend your outdoor season.
4. Lanterns
Add ambient lighting with large outdoor lanterns on tables and on the ground.
5. String lights
Add string lights, especially for parties. Wrap them around columns or string them up around the trees to add a magical effect.
6. Candles
Candles can go inside lanterns, but add battery-operated ones also have a special glow. Use candles with tropical scents.
7. Pool lights
Buy a lighting element for the pool that has multiple dimmable colors and scenes (including festive lights that change to the beat of the music).
8. Indoors outdoors
Wheel out a bar cart from indoors, for example. Add an ice bucket and a kitchen towel to complete the look.
9. Plants
Lush, tropical plants and flowers add personality, a pop of color, and make an outdoor space feel like a get-away. Or bring durable, low-maintenance artificial flowers outdoors, too. Lisa does it all the time!
10. Textiles
Outdoor rugs define a seating area, add color, and can be soft underfoot. Lisa suggests coordinating outdoor and indoor rug colors and patterns. Pillows add pops of color and comfort. Just make sure the pillows are covered in outdoor fabric. Add a basketful of throws to cozy up in the evening.

Thank you for your suggestions!! Our backyard faces a noisy highway. I’d appreciate ideas on how to minimize the noise!! Thank you.
Landscape lighting also looks great in backyards, but preferably hard wired not solar as it puts out much better light.
