Finding Budget-Friendly Ways to Organize My Home

Don't let anyone convince you that you have to spend a lot on organizing systems to get your home decluttered and organized. Today, I’m only spending $10 at Dollar Tree, Walmart, and a thrift store to prove that decluttering doesn’t have to break the bank.

You've told me your closet is one of the most overwhelming projects, so let’s tackle it today. I’m going to show you how to fix that by spending just $10 at Walmart. Trust me, with a few affordable tips, it’s easier than you think!

Closet Organization on a Budget

I want you to head straight to the hangers section at Walmart. I’ve found that Better Homes and Gardens felt-coated swivel hook hangers are some of the best out there:

They come in beautiful colors, and you can get a pack of 30 for just $9.99. The quality of these hangers is far superior to what you’d find at Dollar Tree for the same price, making them the best bang for your buck when it comes to closet organization.

These hangers take up about half the space of those bulky plastic ones, which makes a massive difference in an organized closet. I’ve personally been using them for a year and a half, and not a single one has broken!

Three Easy Hacks for Closet Organization

1. Put Like Items Together

Start by sorting your clothes by type. Group your skirts, dresses, blouses, and pants into their own sections. This creates a much more streamlined visual experience.

2. Color Coordinate

Once you’ve sorted by type, sort by color. This will help you easily spot duplicates, preventing unnecessary purchases in the future.

3. Face Everything the Same Direction

Use those swivel hook hangers to have all your clothes facing the same way. It might seem like a small thing, but it makes your closet look much more organized and accessible.

By just following these steps, my friend was able to transform her closet without getting rid of a single piece of clothing. Now she can easily decide what to donate or keep.

Thrift Store Finds: Hidden Organizing Gems

I love thrift stores because you never know what you'll find. I always go in with a goal in mind to avoid getting overwhelmed. Set a 30-minute timer when you enter and focus on finding specific organizing pieces. My trick is to look for bins or storage items that come in multiples and are sturdy.

For example, I found a fantastic bin for just $7.99, which I used to organize my husband’s drop zone—a spot that had become chaotic.

I primed the bin and used Rustoleum spray paint to give it a custom look.

Organizing doesn’t have to cost a lot if you get creative.

Avoiding Common Organizing Traps

I've fallen into two traps when it comes to buying organizing systems:

  1. Peer Pressure: Just because everyone else is buying a certain container or system doesn’t mean you need to. There’s no need to keep up with trends if they don’t serve you.
  2. Thinking Spending More Adds Value: Spending more on organizing products doesn’t make you or your home more valuable. You have worth just as you are!

That’s why I took this $10 organizing challenge. I tackled my cluttered laundry area using Dollar Tree bins and other items I already had. It’s amazing what you can do with just a few low-cost pieces.

Dollar Tree: A Secret Organizing Weapon

Dollar Tree is one of my go-to places for affordable organizing. Even though their prices are a bit higher now, I was able to get eight items for just $10.

I used these bins to tidy up my laundry area, lining them with foam board I already owned. Organizing your home doesn’t need to cost a fortune.

My next tip is to make sure your organizing system works for you. Just because it looks great or works for someone else doesn’t mean it will be practical for your lifestyle. Test it out for a few days to see if it truly helps you.

The Container Store on a $10 Budget

I hadn’t visited The Container Store in years because I always thought it was too expensive. But I decided to take my $10 and see what I could find.

Although many of their items are pricey, I was surprised to find a few budget-friendly options that could make a difference in my home.

I ended up buying an over-the-door hook for under $10 that solved a huge problem in my laundry area. Now I have a place to hang clothes out of the way, making laundry day more manageable.

Organizing Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive

Organizing your home doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Avoid the distraction of trends and focus on what will actually make your life easier. Use what you already have, and when you do buy, make sure it’s something that fits both your budget and your needs.
