Here's How I Tidied Up a Hallway Closet On a $10 Budget

My goal was to make the hallway, closet space functional and organized - that's it. Keep it simple. The issue with the closet was that it lacked specific storage space for the shoes, hats, gloves, and scarves. And the scarves and gloves were spilling over the basket. After a quick assessment, I saw that the closet didn't need new hangers and I utilized what was already on hand.

So, that leads me to a this organization tip: be sure to always assess the space and determine which products are needed before making any purchases. When you do this it helps you to stay within budget and purchase only what it is required. Once I assessed the space, I went to  DC Goodwill and  Five and Below to search for a shoe rack and storage products.

DC Goodwill had a great selection of shoe organizers and I lucked up when I discovered this shoe rack for $5. Not only was the price right but it extends, providing additional storage space.

I quickly went through the closet and found shirts inside of the closet that didn't belong and placed them in the appropriate spot. Then I spent a few minutes sorting through the pile of gloves, hats, and scarves to determine what needed to be kept and made sure that each glove had a match. Typically, I like to use matching hangers throughout a space but it's not mandatory because what's really important is the functionality of the space. So, instead I just grouped the similar hangers together and then kept the scented sachets clipped to a few hangers to maintain a refreshing aroma.

The grey bin that I purchased from Five Below stored the hats, scarves, and gloves. I purchased two: one for the closet and one for me - lol. For $5 I couldn’t resist and knew what I would use it for. The shoe rack required no assembly and it fit perfectly inside of the closet. Now grabbing a scarf requires no effort and no more having to open the closet door to find a pile of shoes just laying there.

Tidying up this small, closet space is why I love to organize small spaces because of how quickly you can view the progress that was made. And it's why I always advise clients to focus on smaller tasks and spaces first because it can be a huge confidence booster to visualize a once cluttered, non-functional space now organized. It is so helpful and really necessary to have that confidence and stamina when it comes time to tackle the bigger spaces. So, keep in mind that making small changes within your space can add to bigger results.

I have 2 closets in my living room that house our coats. All seasons. They are so packed. And our shoes are either in a basket that spills onto the floor (used when they were small children--much tidier then), or just in front of console table behind front door. Really need this inspiration to get going on them. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration. And what a good job you did!
