How to Transform a Bedroom Closet Without Spending a Penny!

How to declutter and organize a bedroom closet without spending a penny!

When you do a Google search for closet organizing, you will find many companies wanting to sell you costly closet organizing services. But you do need to spend a penny to create more order in your bedroom closets. In the two closets highlighted below, not a single cent was spent in order to create the transformations.

Listen carefully, friends, and you will hear a tale of two bedroom closets. Both closets were unhappy because they always felt too full and their owners seemed to have no idea how uncomfortably stuffed they were. Things were just tossed into them willy nilly and cursing often ensued when the harried owner could not find what she was looking for. What was a poor closet to do? Call Ghostbusters? Since there were no supernatural rumblings from ghosts in hiding, the busy business owner called Pam from Mindful Decluttering & Organizing.

Below are before and after images of the two closets along with a summary of the changes that led to their transformation.

BEDROOM CLOSET 1 BEFORE AND AFTER ORGANIZING

The transformation of overstuffed closet #1

On the left is the sad and overstuffed closet before organizing. On the right is the closet after organized with professional support. Most of this transformation was accomplished by Pam while the client tended to other pressing business needs. Pam and the client set parameters at the beginning of the session and the client popped in between her work activities to answer questions and celebrate the progress.

Before: Before organizing, there was in fact some structure to the way that clothing had been stored once we got to the clothes and pulled them out. The bottom line was that there was too much of it and it had not risen to the owner’s priority list to pull things out and make a thorough assessment of which items currently fit into her lifestyle. This has certainly happened to me before. How about you? This project took about 5 hours to complete and who has that much time? The truth is, you must make time (no you will not find it!) to create systems that can be used to save time in the future.

After: Below are a few of the changes that make this closet more functional and easier to use.

  • Shoes and boots can be easily found
  • The floor has been cleared
  • Sleepwear that blocked access on the right (and obstructed the flow of chi!) was relocated.

Benefits of having an organized closet

Ease of use: The results of the floor being cleared is that the owner can now go into her closet to hang things or place them on their proper shelves more easily and with less stress. With clearly identified and easy to use systems, the impulse to throw things on the floor and shut the door can be avoided.

Easy on the budget! The client now has a much better idea of what she has in her closet and now knows where she can save money by using what she has rather than buying more clothes.

BEDROOM CLOSET #2 BEFORE AND AFTER ORGANIZING

The Journey Of Overstuffed Closet #2

The second bedroom closet also felt neglected. Though there was plenty of shelf space, it was not optimized for ease of use. As the owner was working with a limited budget and was not ready to invest in a major closet renovation, the client and the organizer resolved to work with the existing structure On both sides of this closet, there were rods for hanging clothes as well as shelves. We wondered, what would it be like if all of the clothes were on one side and the shelves were on the other?

The client, who did not have a large number of clothes, felt that having all of the clothes on one side would be a fantastic solution. Her organizer said “brilliant! ~ let’s do it!”

Below are the simple steps that were taken to change the configuration of this closet

  1. It was amazingly easy to take down the rod on the right side of the closet, which freed up space for other kinds of storage on that side.
  2. The clothes all fit on the left side with no problem.
  3. The suitcases were moved to the right side
  4. The floor was cleared by donating things that were no longer needed and reorganizing what remained.

Though more could be done to improve this closet as time and budget allow, you can see and feel the difference!
