How to Shop For Pantry Staples on a Budget: Walmart Vs Dollar Tree

Christine shows us how to get pantry staples on a budget. She was inspired by living in a college town and seeing how young people are still learning about taking care of their basic needs. She hopes this advice will give people a jumping-off point from which they can get their pantry in order.

When people are just starting out they don’t know what to stock up on. They also don’t know where to get the best prices. Christine wants to give people a basic pantry startup for as little money as possible.

Items on Christine’s list include flour, sugar, salt, pepper, and oatmeal. It also includes pasta, chicken broth, oil, rice, dried or canned beans, spices, baking powder, and baking soda. These are just some basics and people can obviously add more items to their pantries based on what they prefer.

Christine goes to Walmart and Dollar Tree for price comparisons. She ended up spending about $20 at Walmart and just under $15 at Dollar Tree. It was hard to compare in the end because their products were different sizes and she also wasn’t able to find everything at Dollar Tree.

Shopping for food

When comparing prices per weight, Walmart beat out Dollar Tree for everything except rice and beans. One might have to spend more money at Walmart but only because they are selling in larger amounts. You would only be spending less at Dollar Tree because you would be buying smaller quantities.

If you have just a few dollars more to spend upfront, Walmart would be a better place to buy your pantry staples. Not only are the products cheaper, but you also get more so you will not need to restock as often. These pantry staples are must-haves for any home.

I love Aldi, but there aren't as many locations. There isn't always an Aldi nearby.
