Decluttering can be a challenging process, as it involves more than just sorting through items. Emotions, stress, and attachments often come into play.


In this second video of her "Minimalism Back to Basics" series, The Minimal Mom explores the concept of decluttering and provides some helpful tips to make the process easier and faster:

What is decluttering?

Decluttering is the act of removing unnecessary items from a cluttered or overcrowded space.


However, decluttering is not always straightforward. Today, we aim to simplify the process.


The 3 B's

Make sure you have a box, bin, and bag whenever you embark on decluttering. The box can be used for donations, the bin can be used as temporary storage for items you're unsure about, and the bag is for items to discard. The 3 B's facilitate quick decision-making.


Where should you start decluttering?

Start in the kitchen, a space that is frequently utilized but often inefficient. Ask yourself 2 questions "Have I used it in the past year?" and "Will I use it in the upcoming year?" Based on your answers, you can allocate items to the Three B's accordingly.


The 20/20 rule

If you can replace an item in 20 minutes and for $20 or less, it is safe to donate.

Would feel relief if the item vanished? This can help you make clear decisions about what to keep or let go.


Sentimental items

Some items might evoke sentimental attachments or simply feel difficult to part with. Don't start with these items, but gradually work up to them. Decluttering becomes easier as you experience the benefits of simplifying your space.


Where should you donate unwanted items?

Be realistic about the time and energy you can dedicate to finding specific donation destinations. Starting with a place that accepts a wide range of items and has flexible hours is a practical choice.


Should you sell unwanted items?

If an item can fetch $50 or more, it might be worth selling. However, set a deadline, such as one week, for the item to sell. If it doesn't, donate or discard it.


The onion method

Decluttering does not have to be completed all at once. It is often more effective to follow the onion method, addressing different layers or areas of your home gradually.


You may find that even after decluttering once, you can still identify more items to let go of. This is normal and indicates your growing confidence and willingness to continue simplifying.
