How to Stop Worrying About Money: 5 Ways to Overcome Financial Fears

Have you ever struggled with how to stop worrying about money? Have you felt anxious or had difficulty sleeping at night because you're worried about money?

If so, join me as I talk about money mindset and fear. My name is Lisa Hice with the Frugal Living Network. I love sharing words of encouragement, inspiration, and spiritual, financial, and lifestyle wellness.

Over the last couple of years, a lot of us have struggled with fear. So how do we combat this? How do we overcome times of fear when things are tight in regards to money?

I personally went through a difficult financial transition where I lost everything financially. I went from making a six-figure income down to being unemployed and eventually losing a lot of my belongings. I always had the fear of not having enough money.

1. Find comfort & counsel

If you are in that time right now, I encourage you to seek counsel and people that can comfort you. Personally, I find comfort in reading Bible verses and I wanted to share a couple with you:

Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteousness. - Isaiah 41:10

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you, by worrying, can add one cubit to its statue? - Matthew 6:25

These are good Bible verses in regards to worry, fear, and anxiety. Even so, fear can keep us up at night and we do all those things that God does not want us to do. So how can you combat that?

2. Pray or journal

Pray in those moments where you're feeling anxious, fearful, or having a hard time sleeping. Take that pause, breathe, relax. Maybe do some journaling and write down what you are afraid of.

What are your prayer requests right now? Turn them over to God and say, Lord, these are the things that I am worried about. Allow God to release or just release that into God's hands and he will provide for you.

3. Have an accountability partner

I do encourage you to have an accountability partner: somebody to check your budget.

I know a lot of times working through finances can cause a lot of fear about money. So what do we do? We avoid it. But what happens, it just gets bigger and bigger, and it actually can manifest into a larger fear.

I realized the more I manifested things that made me afraid and I avoided them, it actually made it bigger. What I did was I took small steps, and that's what I encourage you to do, is take small steps in regards to fears of your money.

Begin taking small steps: balancing the checkbook, setting a budget, or analyzing where your spending is. Work with a financial coach, an advisor, or individual that you trust. Begin small if you're feeling afraid around your money.

4. Focus on financial peace

I love Dave Ramsey in regards to some of the things that he talks about, like financial peace.

When we steward our money in a great way that God desires for us, we feel that financial peace. That means setting aside money for the things that we need, an emergency fund, not spending more than we have, and giving to other people in need.

Those steps bring a feeling of financial peace, rather than financial worry.

5. Remember what is important

I have a couple of practical steps just to kind of finish out. Think about what is pure, what is lovely, what is true. I love that Bible verse from Philippians 4.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

When you're in that fearful mindset, switch it up and remember what is pure and lovely in your life. Something that I've been putting into practice lately is using index cards, and reading the truth daily of what God says about different areas of my life, about money, about truth and thinking and thoughts, and about mindset.

These are also a couple of books that I recommend. One is called Do It Afraid by Joyce Meyer. Another is The Power of Praying Through Fear by Stormie Omartian.

How to stop worrying about money

I hope that this advice was encouraging for you with some practical

steps that you can take. Write some practical steps that you can take right now to begin working through financial hardships or different difficulties or situations that you've been putting off or avoiding and you don't want to deal with it. Write out one or two things that you can do to begin that process.

You don't have to wonder how to stop worrying about money. Begin taking steps today to combat your fears.

I absolutely loved reading this article. I'm a widow, not financially insecure-- but very careful of my spending and living - because of only my income. With a spouse, I never found myself worried about finances (my Eddy was great with finances) but being alone - for some reason - I do ! I loved you putting Bible verse in your article- I pray for the Lord's guidance with everything I do !

    Thanks for posting
