If you’re struggling with the high prices at the pump, right now, you’re not alone! According to U.S. Today, gas prices are the most expensive in the U.S. history, even breaking 2008 record highs when you account for inflation.

Like many of you, we’ve been feeling pain at the pump when filling up our cars recently and we wanted to share some of our top tips for saving money on gas. here are just a few ways to save!

How to Find Cheap Gas

If you’re looking to save money at the pup, here are some top ways to save.

Shop Around

While you don’t want to waste fuel to save money on gas, it can be prudent to know which stations have lower prices. For example gas is always 20 cents or more higher here in our small town, but when we fill up at stations in a nearby community only a few miles away, we can see big savings.

Not sure how to find the cheapest gas near you? Use apps like Gas Buddy and Gas Guru to see all the prices for your area.

Take Advantage of Fuel Saver Rewards

Did you know that some grocery store chains reward you for your purchases with future savings on fuel? A popular Midwest grocery store chain, Hy-Vee gives fuel saver rewards when you buy select items and offers at your local store. Just provide your fuel saver number at the checkout and you can use the savings for cheap gas. Our Hy-Vee pharmacy currently also offers 5 cents off per gallon for each prescription filled. These savings can add up quickly and we’ve even gotten free tanks of gas.

Here are some of the stores that offer fuel saver rewards include Albertsons, Hy-Vee, BJ’s Warehouse, Giant Eagle, Fred Meyer, Kroeger, Murphy USA, Safeway, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop and Shop ‘n Save. Check the website for your local favorite retailers to see if they have a fuel saver program.

Are you a BP shopper? Register for BPme Rewards and start saving 5 cents on every gallon. Most other gas station chains have reward programs where you can save money. Search online to see what’s available for the fuel stations in your area.

Use Your Membership Rewards to Save on Gas

Do you have a membership to Sam’s Club or Costco? These warehouse retailers have some of the lowest prices around, however at most locations you need to be a member in order to save on fuel. We regularly find cheap gas and fill up at our area Sam’s Club and often save 30 cents per gallon or more. Just be sure to have your membership card ready when you’re ready to pump to get the savings.

Thinking about joining Sam’s Club or Costco for gas and other savings? For a limited time purchase purchase a Costco membership activation certificate to join as a new member and receive a Costco Shop Card. Prefer to join Sam’s Club? Check out the latest membership offers here.

Pay With Cash

Did you know some gas stations offer a cash discount? They offer this to shoppers since they save money on credit card fees. Check at your favorite fuel stations to see if this discount is available.

Pay With a Cash Back Credit Card

Does your credit card offer cash back? Many credit cards offer 1%, 2% or more when you use the card to purchase fuel. Use this cash back savings to use towards future purchases.

Keep it Regular

If regular fuel is recommended for your car, don’t spend the extra cash on premium. There is no improved fuel economy savings, and the premium price tag just costs more.

Pump your gas very slowly as to not lose much to fumes. Also pump your gas in the coolest part of the day for the same reason.

This is not true, some cars require premium gas due to engine design. However, if you’re car does not require it then you are wasting your money.
