5 Work-From-Home Jobs You Should NOT Try in 2023

1. Blogging

Blogging can be a great way to make money if you are in it for the long haul, but just because you build it, doesn’t mean people will come.

The three main ways to make money with a blog are through affiliate marketing, then there are ads, and the third way is through sponsored posts. The only way you are going to get advertisers though is by having a blog that a lot of people read.

Building a blog and social media platform that gains traction and followers requires investing a great deal of time and energy. It’s not as simple as just writing a blog and posting it. You have to be willing to put in at least five hours of work per week for a year before you will start making any money.

2. YouTube

YouTube is another way people think they can make money online. As a YouTuber myself I can tell you, it takes a lot of time and effort. It takes a lot of time to grow your channel subscriber base.

You will also have to invest a lot of time and energy into learning how to grow your channel. It’s not enough to just put a video up. You have to research keywords, research titles, research how to make a good video, and how to outline it.

There is a lot to learn and it requires hours and hours of research. If you need money now, YouTube is not the answer. If you are passionate about making videos and are willing to put five to ten hours in a week for an entire year without seeing any money, then YouTube can work for you. It just requires some investing.

3. Surveys

If you search for how to make money online you will probably get recommendations to do surveys. Do not try to make money doing surveys. The money you can make from these surveys is beer money or coffee money sites.

That means you make a very small amount of money. It can add up if you do it over a long period of time, but it is not a great way to get a reasonable amount of money quickly.

4. Social media

The main ways to make money on social media are through affiliate marketing and sponsored posts. The problem is that many sponsored posts will lead the viewers off the site, so many social media platforms do not push out sponsored posts or affiliate marketing links. That is because they don’t want you to leave their platform.

It also takes a really long time to build up a following on social media. Sure, you have those one-in-a-million cases of someone exploding on social media, but that is not the norm. For most people, it will take a couple of years to build a real following. You have to be willing to put in a lot of time before you will see any returns.

5. Printables

People oversimplify the process and make it sound like you can just throw something together put it online and see profits. That is simply not the case. Any get-rich-quick scheme you hear a guru talking about online is false. 

Any money you make online will cost you time and effort. If you go on Etsy and look up printables, you will see that there are hundreds of high-selling printables already out there and they are being sold for very low prices.

Those people are making money because they sell large quantities and they can do that because they have been online for a long time and were created by graphic designers and creators who really know what they’re doing.

While the above jobs won’t be the get-rich-quick schemes you were hoping for, I do have some ideas for online work that will make you money. I suggest trying to find work as a virtual assistant. This just means you will be helping businesses get organized.

You could be doing secretarial work, proofreading, editing videos, accounting, or a variety of other tasks. Virtual assistants can make anywhere from $15-$75 an hour.

While this advice might sound hypocritical from someone who makes a living online, posting videos, blogs, and printables, I am just trying to give you a realistic idea of how much time and commitment this takes.

It is absolutely doable if you are willing to put a great deal of energy into it, especially if you are passionate about it. However, if you are looking for a lower level of commitment for some extra money on the side, I would recommend skipping all of these options and trying something like virtual assistant work.
