10 Things Worth Spending Money On as a Frugal Family

I'm going to give you 10 things worth spending money on as a frugal homeschool family. As a bit of a disclaimer, when we buy these items and spend money on them, we will never go into debt to do so. If we cannot afford them, we will not buy them. Or we will take money out of savings or save up for a particular item.

1. Home improvements and renovations

We bought our house about three years ago, and it was a fixer-upper. It was very dated. We have spent a fair bit of money on doing the house up. We have replaced and upgraded the boiler, sunk in all the gas and central heating into the walls, had it plastered over, got new windows, and got shutters on the windows.

We've done the floors. We've just done a little DIY in the kitchen, and we did the upstairs bathroom. We felt like we've improved a lot and still have so much left to do.

The reason we are happy spending money on home improvements and renovations is because this potentially is going to be our forever home. So we want to invest in it to make it exactly how we want it. We spend a lot of time here, and it feels very calming.

2. Appliances we use every day

There are two items in particular that we have spent; I would say, a lot of money on. They are two things we use every single day without fail, and they need to work well.

One of them is a vacuum. We bought a Dyson vacuum two years ago, a handheld one, and I do not regret it, but I think it was about $746.00, which we saved up for and decided to do.

Using a blender to make smoothies

The second item we have spent a ton of money on is a blender. We were given a Vitamix blender by my grandmother back in 2016. After having that for a few weeks, we quickly said we would never go without the Vitamix blender again. We decided that it would be worth spending that money to get another one if it ever broke.

Unfortunately, it did break, and it wasn't under warranty this last time. So when that broke, we decided to invest and buy a brand new Vitamix because you get the warranty again; we decided to take the plunge and buy a new one and look after them.

3. Feeding people and entertaining

When we can plan, and we know people are coming around and I've had the time to plan it, we are happy to spend a lot of money on feeding the people than people that are coming around. We make loads of food. I want to be one of these people who, when people come around, know they won't leave hungry, and we will spoil people with delicious home-cooked food.

4. Our kids' birthday parties

I do not mean their presents, we are very frugal with our presents. We tend to buy secondhand or find them for free on freecycle pages, things they've wanted because we know the family will be buying them gifts, and we spend a lot of time, effort, and money planning their birthday parties.

I want my kids to remember these fantastic birthday parties, and I feel they'll remember them as a precious memory.

Kids' activities and hobbies

5. Our kids' activities, hobbies, and clubs

We delegate a specific amount of money to be able to pay for our kids' clubs and activities, experiences, and days out.

If there are things that they want to do, we want to be able to try and equip them to enjoy that and learn and do things, especially as a home-educating family. There are a few things that you're going to miss from not going to school. So if we can send them to clubs to learn these things and to experience them, then that's great for us.

6. Board games

We tend to use a lot of board games as a home-educating family, and we have a lot of friends around that come over to play board games. We have a lot of board games, and we're willing to spend money on board games that we want and think will benefit our family. We buy board games because we know they'll last a lifetime.

7. Nice artwork

We tend to go to art galleries quite a lot because we like looking around them. If we ever see a piece that makes us both together at the same time feel something and feel joy, and we like it, we would be willing to spend a lot of money on that.

Like with home renovation and improvements, I feel like home decor is a similar one for us if it fills us with joy, makes us happy in our home, and it's something we can treasure and look after for a long time.

Buying shoes

8. Shoes

We don't spend money on shoes that we don't need. So I will only ever need five pairs of shoes. I have my welly boots, my sandals, my Doc Martins, a pair of trainers and a pair of heels. So although we've spent a lot of money on them, we look after them, and they last us a long time, so we're happy to spend extra on shoes.

9. Perfumes and aftershaves

I don't mean excess perfumes and aftershaves. When I say we spend money on that, we buy one perfume or an aftershave we like. We'll spend a lot of money on a nice one, which will last us a year or two. We're not buying $12 bottles of perfume. We're buying nice ones that we love the smell of.

10. Good cameras

I was doing photography three, four, or five years ago, and we wanted to invest in it. We bought some excellent cameras, to begin with. We're happy we did invest in them because now we've got so many lovely family photos that we've been able to take over the last five years.

I invested in cast iron and Revere ware cookware.

Some of my cookware was inherited. When I saw how much better it cooked, cleaned, and lasted, I invested, and have not regretted the money spent at all.

I inherited my Revere ware along with my husband. He bought/used it when he lived alone in the 1950s. I am still using it. It still shines and cooks well. A really good investment. I have several pieces of cast iron. Some I use daily. I even use them on my glass top stove. I am careful, but they work so well I cannot think of being without them.
