Take a Tour of This Alternative Straw Bale Home
Just when you think you’ve finally seen every type of house out there, you discover that inventive people have done it yet again—they’ve come up with a new alternative housing option you never would have thought of on your own.
The latest video on Exploring Alternatives gives you a look inside a straw bale home. And it’s more impressive than you could probably imagine if you tried.
What do straw bale home plans look like? They definitely don’t look like the straw bales you often see on farms. Straw bale home designs are surprisingly similar to more traditional stick-built homes. Although they do tend to blend in with nature a little more.
Wanting to build an eco-friendly home that was more energy efficient than most and built with a variety of natural products, Chris and Christine decided that a straw bale home on a large plot of land was just what they were looking for.
Doing so would give them a bit of a homesteading vibe and become the perfect place to raise their son.
With a large garden outside, a chicken coop, and a greenhouse, Chris says living a simpler life requires more hard work but it’s really a labor of love, and they can’t imagine living anywhere else at this time.
Learning how to build a straw bale house isn’t all that difficult when you consult with builders who have experience in that area.
Chris and Christine were able to build a healthy home with good indoor air quality due in large part to the natural wood products finished with natural oils, silicate-based paints with no VOCs, clay finishes on the walls, earthen floors, a light clay straw wall system, and stone.
And seeing is believing. After checking out the house online, just about anyone can agree that a straw bale home isn’t all that different.
