20K Tiny House: How She Built a DIY Tiny Home From Scratch

Jessica, an attorney from Austin, Texas, built a 20k tiny house by putting in three years of sweat equity herself and receiving help from her dad along the way. While the original plan was for her to build a tiny house all her own, she fell in love shortly thereafter and has been living in the space with her girlfriend Bernadette ever since.

How to build a tiny house

Wondering how much it costs to build a tiny house like the one you see here? Jessica shows us how anyone can build a tiny house for under 20k with a little elbow grease and some creative thinking.

At only 24 feet long, 8½ feet wide, and 13 feet long, this couple’s home has more character and charm than one might originally think.

The exterior of the home has a very modern look with white siding and a black metal roof, a green front door, a large wooden porch, and string lights hanging down. Plus, it’s parked next to a large poured patio that’s perfect for entertaining and offers an abundance of seating options.

Building a tiny house from scratch may have taken Jessica some time to complete, but stepping into the home makes it all feel worth it in the end.

With a white subway tile and dark grout backsplash, wooden countertops, and a large under-mount sink, the kitchen has plenty of space to work in and cook up a decent meal.

The seating area has space to lounge in comfort and watch tv. The bathroom is large enough for a full-size shower and bath, vanity, sink, and toilet along with some hanging basket storage. And there’s a loft bedroom with vaulted ceilings.

The original plan was to live in this 20k tiny house for a decade or more, so Jessica included full-size appliances as well.
