Transforming a 40ft Container Into a Cozy Tiny House Bachelor Pad
In the heart of Durango, Colorado, nestled within the Island Cove Tiny Home Park, Chris has transformed a simple 40ft container into a cozy and functional tiny house.
This bachelor pad, home to Chris and his dog Mac, offers a glimpse into the possibilities of compact living. Built by Ark Tiny Homes, this container home is a testament to innovative design, comfort, and practicality.
Follow along on this cozy tiny house tour.
Exterior features and outdoor living
Chris’s container home, measuring 40ft long, 9ft tall, and about 8ft wide, is a compact yet comfortable living space.
The exterior of the home is complemented by a professionally built deck, providing a serene outdoor area to relax, especially during the summer months.
Mac, Chris’s dog, enjoys spending time on the deck, watching people and deer pass by.
The outdoor area also accommodates Chris’s motorcycles, which are stored in a shed that doubles as a storage space and hides the gooseneck trailer to which the container is mounted.
The shed is ingeniously designed to store camping gear, bicycles, ski gear, and Chris’s second Harley motorcycle.
Interior design and living space
Stepping inside the 320-square-foot home, the space immediately impresses with its cozy and inviting atmosphere.
The dark metal framing, black countertops, and exposed beams create a modern industrial aesthetic, balanced by antique furniture that adds a touch of warmth.
The living room, with its large multifunctional couch, serves as both a seating area and an extra bed for guests. This space-efficient design allows Chris to maximize comfort without compromising on functionality.
One standout feature is the antique desk, inherited from his mother, which not only serves as a workspace but also houses a vintage turntable.
The open shelving beneath it provides additional storage and a place for Chris to enjoy his collection of vinyl records, adding a nostalgic touch to the space.
Kitchen and utility space
The kitchen, though compact, is fully equipped with black solid countertops and an industrial metal backsplash.
The single large sink and propane stove, which can be set up for either gas or propane, meet all of Chris’s cooking needs.
Despite its size, the kitchen’s layout is both practical and stylish, with a pull-down faucet and a stove that features a light-up element, adding to the kitchen’s modern appeal.
Adjacent to the kitchen, Chris has creatively utilized a small nook next to the refrigerator to house a safe for keepsakes and a storage area for Mac’s supplies.
This space was initially designed as a desk area but proved more functional as a safe storage, highlighting the flexibility of tiny house living.
Bathroom and laundry area
The bathroom in Chris’s container home is designed with functionality in mind. It features a stackable washer and dryer, a full stand-up shower, and a regular-sized toilet.
The design continues the black countertop and industrial metal theme found in the kitchen.
However, Chris notes a couple of areas for improvement: the need for a light above the mirror and possibly replacing the swing door with a sliding barn door to save space.
Bedroom and storage solutions
Chris’s bedroom, accessible through a sliding barn door, is a cozy retreat with a full-size bed and plenty of natural light from a large sliding glass door.
The room is thoughtfully designed with standing lamps that offer additional storage, and pull-out bins under the bed maximize the available space.
Chris also customized a closet to match the kitchen and bathroom countertops, providing ample storage for clothing and accessories.
Building experience
Chris’s journey to owning a container home was driven by a desire for simplicity and financial freedom. He worked with Ark Tiny Homes to create a living space that suits his needs while staying within his budget.
Despite a few challenges, such as plumbing issues and the learning curve of working with a new home, Chris is pleased with the outcome.
The container’s structure, designed to withstand harsh conditions, offers a durable and cost-effective alternative to traditional housing.
Financing, insurance, and mobility
One of the unique aspects of Chris’s container home is its mobility.
By mounting the container on a double axle gooseneck trailer, he was able to secure RV financing and insurance, making the home not only affordable but also flexible in terms of location.
The total cost of the home was around $80,000, a fraction of the cost of a traditional house, allowing Chris to pay off the loan quickly and focus on enjoying his lifestyle.
Dating and tiny house living
Living in a tiny home presents unique challenges in the dating world, as not everyone is comfortable with such a minimalist lifestyle.
However, Chris sees this as a positive, as it helps him find partners who share his values and lifestyle preferences.
For those who embrace simplicity and freedom, tiny house living can be an ideal match.
