Tucked away in closets, basements, and attics, many people unknowingly hold items that collectors are eager to pay big money for.

From retro gadgets to first-edition books, here are seven valuable items you might already own.

1. Vintage Electronics (Walkmans, Game Consoles, and Old Apple Products)

Some electronics that seemed outdated a decade ago are now sought-after collectibles. A first-generation iPod in its original box can sell for hundreds.

Classic video game consoles like the Nintendo 64 or Sega Genesis are popular with nostalgic buyers, especially if they’re in good condition and come with original packaging.

2. Mid-Century Modern Furniture

If you inherited or held onto furniture from the 1950s–70s, you could be sitting on a gold mine. Designers like Eames, Knoll, and Herman Miller are highly collectible, with even a single chair sometimes selling for thousands of dollars.

3. Retro Kitchenware (Pyrex, CorningWare, and Tupperware)

That colorful Pyrex mixing bowl set from your grandmother’s kitchen isn’t just practical, it’s also collectible. Certain patterns and colors can sell for hundreds. The same goes for rare Tupperware pieces and CorningWare casserole dishes with discontinued prints.

4. First-Edition Books

That old hardcover on your shelf might be worth more than you think. First editions of famous titles (especially those by authors like J.K. Rowling, Ernest Hemingway, or F. Scott Fitzgerald) can fetch serious prices. Even modern books, if rare or signed, might hold surprising value.

5. Vintage Toys and Board Games

Toys from the 70s, 80s, and 90s are booming in the resale market. Think original Star Wars action figures, Beanie Babies in mint condition, or even unopened LEGO sets. Board games like early Monopoly or Clue editions can also fetch impressive sums.

6. Jewelry and Watches

Many people overlook old jewelry boxes, but vintage or antique pieces (even costume jewelry from brands like Trifari or Weiss) can be collectible. Watches, particularly mechanical ones from big brands (Rolex, Omega, or Seiko) can command significant prices.

7. Vinyl Records

While not every old record is valuable, specific albums (particularly first pressings or limited editions) can be worth a small fortune. Beatles, Rolling Stones, and jazz records tend to do especially well, but even niche artists have dedicated fan bases.

Google or Bing searches will help to get you started. Resale sites like eBay will give you a sense of what the market will bear, at least the eBay market. As others have pointed out, if you sell on eBay expect to pay fees that will reduce your cut.

Local sites like Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor are another option. No fees or shipping. However, you do have to be careful of scammers. Accept only cash. No Venmo or checks. If you're not comfortable having people come to your home then you can meet in a public space. Often your local police station will have a parking spot for online sales. Most people are expecting a bargain on these sites so it may not be the best place to sell high value items.

Consignment stores are another option. However, they too will take a sizable chunk of sale price and often have an automatic price reduction to move items along.

      Good luck!
