There are so many things that make your home look dated without you even realizing it. The problem, of course, is that big remodeling projects are time-consuming and costly.

Fortunately, how to update a dated home without remodeling is something Kristen McGowan knows a thing or two about. And she’s ready to share her best home update advice without the added headache.

In fact, she has 8 tips for completing affordable and easy home updates that anyone can do without hiring a contractor.

First, Kristen says that paint goes an awfully long way. You can create an updated look simply by painting walls, brick, tile, trim, cabinets, ceilings, and floors as well.

Second, you can add detail to existing flat panel doors with molding. This trim will give your doors a new, more modern look.

Third, Kristen recommends changing out all cream-colored wall plates to bright white. From light switches to outlets, bright white gives your home a fresh look for a very low price.

Fourth, consider adding trim to flat walls to give them a more decorative aesthetic. This simple and affordable home update makes your home appear significantly more expensive.

Fifth, at the top of Kristen’s list of dated home decor items that must be replaced, are old window treatments. She says that heavy draperies, vertical blinds, and frilly curtains are often forgotten and are a huge eye sore.

Sixth, keep warm saturated wood tones in mind. By restaining or whitewashing wood cabinets, windows, doors, and trim you can complete a home update without replacing a thing.

Seventh, another very doable project is to remove old carpet. This works especially well when you have hardwood floors underneath them that can be refinished.

Lastly, Kristen suggests ridding your home of builder-grade mirrors in the bathrooms for a home update that really gets noticed.
