The Best Pizza Rolls Recipe + Other Delicious Homemade Snacks

I am all about making food at home from scratch. However, we all have our favorites that we sometimes just have to buy.

Today, I am going to share three amazing recipes for homemade versions of my family’s favorite store-bought treats. Let’s get to it!

Pizza rolls

These do not look like the store bought pizza rolls, but trust me, they taste even better.

For this amazing homemade pizza rolls recipe you will need 4 oz pepperoni slices, 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cup pizza sauce, 1/2 tbsp Italian seasoning, 10 egg roll wrappers and 1/4 cup water.

1. Cut up one whole package of pepperonis and place them in a bowl. Cut them in smaller pieces so they are easier to eat and you can get more of an even filling per wrap.

2. Add in a couple handfuls of cheese to the pepperonis. I used Colby Jack blend, but you can use any kind that you want to.

3. Add pizza sauce and mix. You do not want the mixture to be too dry, but you also do not want too much pizza sauce because then it will ooze out, and it will not deep fry very well. See the picture for the perfect consistency.

4. Lay out egg roll wrappers or wonton wrappers. Put the filling on top and wrap them egg roll style: wet the edges with water, roll the one side over the filling, roll each corner in, add a bit more water at the top just so it sticks better, and wrap it tightly.

I have tried a few different shapes but found egg roll to be best in terms of wrapper to filling ratio. Feel free to play around with it and see what shape your family likes best.

5. Get the oil going on the stove and get the rolls deep fried by dropping them in and taking them out as soon as they are golden brown.

6. Serve with some extra pizza sauce on the side.

This is honestly the best pizza roll recipe that I have ever tried.

Puffed pastry treats

This is not exactly the puff pastry because it does not have that many layers, but it is a quick, affordable and delicious version you will be able to make from scratch in your own kitchen.

For this puffed pastry recipe, you will need 1 1/4 cup very cold salted butter, 1/2 cup very cold water, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 2 cups all-purpose flour

1. Add your flour into a food processor. Then slowly add in cold butter and combine. You should get a crumble consistency.

2. Slowly add in ice water until the dough forms. It will come away from the blades, start getting thick and form into a dough.

3. Remove the dough from the food processor and knead it about 10 times on a lightly floured surface.

4. Roll the dough out and fold it like an envelope. Fold each side in, and then fold in half.

5. Wrap it up in some Saran Wrap, and leave it in the fridge for at least an hour. I recommend giving it even more time, like several hours or even leaving it there overnight, to get that butter really cold.

6. Roll the dough out, and shape it however you want according to the recipe you are using. I am making apple tarts using apple pie jam that I made a while back, and you are welcome to join me.

Roll it out, cut it, and add filling into each one. Feel free to add some caramel and pecans and use egg wash or brush some cream around the edges if you do not want to waste an egg.

7. Bake at 375 F or freeze to bake whenever you need puffed pastries.

Cheese crackers

This homemade cheese cracker recipe will get you closest you can get to Cheez-its. All you need is 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese, 4 Tbsp cold butter, 1 cup flour, 2–3 Tbsp water, salt, garlic powder and onion powder.

1. Put the flour in your food processor and add an 8 oz bag of cheddar cheese. You could use bland if you wanted to, but of course, a nice yellow cheese is going to give you the color of the Cheez –Its and a sharper cheddar flavor that you are looking for.

2. Add onion powder, garlic powder and salt. Do not be shy with the seasonings – make sure you can smell them.

3. Add in the butter and blend it up until it is coarse.

4. Put the lid on and start slowly adding ice-cold water. Pulse it until it forms the dough.

5. Take the dough out of the food processor and knead it for a couple minutes, then leave it in the fridge for a couple of hours. The longer you leave them, the easier it will be to roll the dough thin.

6. Roll the dough out on a floured surface, cut it into squares with a pizza cutter and make tiny holes in the middle using a chopstick for the signature look.

7. Bake for 15-17 minutes in an oven preheated to 350 F. Crackers are done when they are a light to a medium golden brown.
