How to Organize a Skinny Freezer to Maximize Space

For this Organizing Session Saturday, I am transforming my skinny freezer. I have a tall skinny freezer that used to not be organized efficiently.

Today, I am giving it a makeover in order to maximize space and make it convenient for use and fit for my personal needs and preferences.

If you are looking for small freezer organization ideas, let’s get started!

Freezer

This tall skinny freezer is generally quite spacious, but the ice maker just takes up way too much space.

We decided we did not need that much ice, so I am removing the ice maker and just installing an ice bin instead.

It can hold about 5 or 6 full ice trays, which is more than enough for my needs.

The ice bin is the perfect size to fit next to the mechanism once the ice maker is removed, so I just needed a shelf to hold it up there. I came across a glass cutting board in the clearance section of a discount store.

I pulled out my measuring tape and was so happy to find that it was the perfect size to create a shelf for the ice bin. Glass cutting boards are excellent alternatives to shelves in small freezer organization.

The section below was a very tall one, so I knew I needed to find some stacking shelves to divide it into two or three sections. The width was exactly 10 inches.

I searched online and found Bed Bath & Beyond stacking shelves made for the bathroom. They were 10 inches deep according to the website, but when I got home, they were snug and sat like this.

However, no panic needed. Being that the shelf is plastic, I knew it would shrink in the cold, so I let it chill and it contracted and fit perfectly.

I zip tied the front of the shelf to the wire shelf, as well as the back. I then turned the little knobby ends of the zip ties at the front to face back so that they would not interfere with anything coming in or out of the freezer from the top or bottom of this area.

Then I inserted the second shelf above this shelf. Because these are made to stack on top of each other. They have a groove on each end which holds the shelf in place.

Once the shelves were ready, I used these Made Smart bins that I got from the bathroom section at Target. You can label them with a dry erase marker, but I just used my label maker.

At the bottom, I just reinserted the drawer that comes with the freezer after I cleaned it out.

And here is the final freezer, all good to go and ready for all the delicious meal plan containers I am going to fill it with! I hope you now have a better idea of how to organize a small freezer.

Do you have any tricks to keep your freezer space as efficient as possible? How often do you clear your freezer out and reorganize it? Do you keep it organized neatly or just throw things on top of each other?

I would love to read your comments! Happy organizing!
