4 Quick and Tasty Canned Chicken Recipes

I’m going to share some of my favorite canned chicken recipes. If your family is anything like mine, you probably have a bunch of canned chicken that no one wants to eat. I’ve come up with some recipes that will turn an unappealing can of chicken into a delicious meal no one can resist.

One thing I’ve learned about canned chicken is that the more time you let it sit outside the can the less it tastes like it comes from a can.

Taking it out of the can and putting it in a marinade in the fridge for a night or even two nights is going to really make a difference.

I’m using cans of chicken with different marinades to make 4 separate meals.

I’ll put each can in a bowl with the marinade and stick them in the fridge covered with saran wrap to really let those flavors sink in.

Bread dough

1. Bread dough

I also made bread dough to use with each recipe. I used a bread maker to make the bread but you can use a bowl if you don’t have a bread maker. Combine the following ingredients and mix them to make bread dough.

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2.5 teaspoons of yeast
  • ¼ cup of oil
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar or flour
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Barbeque buns

2. Barbeque buns

Divide up your bread dough and flatten it into a round bowl-like shape.

Buns

These are going to be filled with our chicken mixture. We’re making a kind of chicken-filled hot pocket.

Adding barbeque sauce

The first marinade is a spicy barbeque sauce. I put in ¼ cup of barbeque sauce with my 5-ounce can of chicken. I also added a little bit of Worcestershire sauce to give it a little bit of a smokey flavor.

Heating chicken

After a couple of nights of marinating, I put the chicken in a pan and added a ¼ cup chopped onion and ¼ cup green peppers. I left it on the heat until the onions and peppers started to soften.

Chicken mix in dough

Next, I added 2 tablespoons of the mix into the center of each roll I flattened. I pulled the dough out and over to wrap it and pinch it shut to close it into a ball. I put them on a baking sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

The chicken-filled rolls came out golden brown and light and fluffy. To go with this meal, I also steamed a bag of frozen corn and added a little butter, salt, and pepper. I added some pepper slices to the plate for a garnish.

Thai curry chicken

3. Thai curry chicken

For the Thai curry chicken, I used coconut milk, ginger, turmeric, and curry. I also used some soy sauce. Here are the ingredients and measurements for the sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons of soy sauce
  • 1 can of coconut milk

I left the chicken marinade overnight. The next day I put the curry chicken in a pot to heat it. I added ¼ cup of chopped onion and ¼ cup of chopped green pepper. I also chopped up a mango and put that in as well.

I added a pinch of red pepper flakes for a bit more heat. I put in some salt and then added a little bit of lemon juice. This was to add some acidity to the mix.

Cooking bread

I took the bread dough and flattened it into smaller pancake-like sections. I put them one at a time on a frying pan on the stove, flipping them every half a minute until some bubbles started forming. I fried them until they were cooked through.

The small focaccia-like bread was excellent. The curry came out delicious and flavorful. It was impossible to tell that it was made with canned chicken.

Chicken croquette

4. Chicken croquette

For this recipe, I used egg, mustard, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and thyme. I filled a frying pan about 1⁄4 of an inch deep with oil and let it start to heat through on medium heat.

For the chicken croquette mixture, I took 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs and added it to the chicken mixture. I mixed everything thoroughly.

Making chicken croquette

I put about ¼ cup of breadcrumbs into a separate bowl. I took a spoonful of the chicken mixture and put it into the breadcrumbs to coat it. Then I put it in the hot oil.

I continued making these breaded chicken balls and putting them into the pan to fry until the mixture was finished.

Once they got golden brown on one side, I flipped them to let them cook on the other side.

Making mashed potatoes

I made some mashed potatoes using instant mashed potatoes to go on the side. I made it according to the package directions and it came out great. This turned out to be my favorite out of all three recipes. I never thought of making chicken nuggets like this.

Canned chicken recipes

My entire family loved every one of these meals and no one could tell that the chicken had come from a can. Canned chicken is such a great way to cut the cost of your meals and when prepared the right way no one will know it wasn’t fresh.

I love to use canned chicken. My favorite recipe is to use1-2 cans of chicken, 3 cups of stovetop stuffing from the canister,1 1/2 cups water(less is better, you use can always add more if needed) , half an onion chopped and 1-2 stalks of celery chopped and 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine. Using a microwave safe bowl with a lid, microwave butter, onion and celery for 2 minutes, then put the chicken(drained and flaked) and the stuffing mix into the veggies and butter. Add seasonings if desired and then drizzle the water over stuffing and stir everything up. Cover and microwave 4/5 minutes then let rest 5 minutes. Makes 4 servings. Sometimes if there are leftovers I put them into the waffle maker and add gravy.

They all sound good. But did I miss something? I only saw three meals along with the recipe for bread.
