$8 Budget Kid-Friendly Meal: Mini Tacos With Ground Turkey

My adorable 7-year-old son, Kylen, is going to make a budget dinner! He’s making tacos on a budget! It’s his favorite thing right now.

We’re going to make this budget kid-friendly meal of mini tacos. Ground beef is too expensive right now so we’re going to use ground turkey. The ingredients for this dinner cost $7.91! It’s actually under budget. Okay, let’s cook dinner! Here are the ingredients:

Mini tacos ingredients:

  • 1 Pound ground turkey
  • Refried beans
  • Corn tortillas
  • Shredded cheese
  • Taco seasoning
Browning the ground turkey

1. Brown the turkey

Put the turkey in a pan and brown it up. Then drain the meat.

Adding taco seasoning to the meat

2. Add taco seasoning

Add your taco seasoning to the drained meat that’s put back in the pan. Wait for the meat mixture to get a bit thicker as it cooks.

Adding beans to the meat mix

3. Add beans

Add the whole package of refried beans into the meat mix. Stir it into the meat really well.

Shredding the cheese

4. Shred cheese

Use your shredder to shred the cheese.

Spraying the pan with cooking spray

5. Spray pan

Spray cooking spray on the pan where you will cook the tortillas.

Adding tortillas to the pan

6. Add tortillas to the pan

Put the tortillas into the pan.

Adding cheese to the tortilla

7. Add cheese

Sprinkle cheese on each tortilla in the pan.

Adding the meat mixture on top of the cheese

8. Add the meat mixture

Put a bit of meat mixture on top of the cheese on each tortilla.

Folding the tortillas

9. Fold tortillas

Use a spatula to fold each tortilla in the pan in half. This takes a little bit of patience. Once the tortilla is folded over, use the spatula to press it down so it stays folded.

Frying the tortillas

10. Fry

Fry the tortillas until they begin to brown. Flip and brown the other side. Once they are browned on both sides, they’re done!

Budget kid-friendly meals

Kylen made 24 mini tortillas with this mix. Dip them in salsa if you want.

Budget kid-friendly meals

I highly encourage you to make budget kid-friendly meals with your family. It’s so fun to watch them make their masterpieces. I had to help Kylen since he’s only 7 years old, but he did great. He felt like a big kid.

When he saw the difference in price between the hamburger and the turkey, he was shocked and was determined to make budget tacos!

If you’ve tried this with your kids, let me know in the comments how it went or if you have another budget kid-friendly meal you’d like to share.

My kids always enjoyed making English muffin pizzas. It’s something they can actually do themselves-English muffin halves, jarred spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni. They’re popped in the microwave, so no fear of them getting burned.
