Let’s discuss the best food to stockpile! Actually, most of what I’m going to show you today is more related to home care and self-care.

These are just some of the items I recommend stockpiling, but it’s obviously based on the needs and quantities of me and my family. It would be best if you tailored your stash according to the food and care products you need.

Watch my video for more information!

Roll of paper towel

1. Paper towel rolls

Paper towels are a great thing to stockpile. There’s always going to be a mess to wipe up. We actually stopped buying regular paper towels and started using a Blue Roll which is much cheaper and lasts you much longer.

Disposable containers with lids

2. Disposable tins

Load up on disposable tins. I’m referring to the kind that you put on the barbecue or in the oven. The best ones to get are the sets with lids. If there's no power inside you’re probably going to be cooking on a barbecue in which case these are good to have around.

Stack of white paper plates

3. Paper plates

Stock up on paper plates. If we’re preparing for emergencies here, there potentially could be no water. If that’s the case the last thing you’ll need is a pile of dirty dishes. Paper plates last for ages and they are cheap.

Roll of black garbage bags

4. Biodegradable garbage bags

I'm sure everyone already has a roll of garbage bags at home. However, I strongly suggest stocking up with extras. It's always handy to have garbage bags.

If for whatever reason, trash isn’t being collected, and the garbage bags are sitting outside you’ll probably want to double bag. A good trash bag supply is important.

Vinegar

5. Vinegar

White vinegar is a great thing to have for cleaning. It has a wide variety of uses. You can find really big bottles for stockpiling. I do a lot of preserving so the five-liter containers make sense for my needs.

First Aid kit with supplies

6. First aid supplies

I always keep a first aid kit in the house in case there’s an emergency and someone is in need of first aid, for example, a wound irrigation solution for a cut or graze is a great thing to have.

You don’t need to stockpile these things, you just need to have them around. Just make sure you have basic supplies like bandages, different dressings, medical tape, and those sorts of supplies.

Woman holding blister packs of medication

7. Cold and flu medicine

Make sure you have cough medicine, paracetamol, and other medication for colds and flu.

Recently my husband and I were sick with COVID for a few weeks. My husband still had to work nights. Without cold and flu medicine he couldn't possibly have made it through. You really just need these things to function when you’re sick.

Energizing effervescent tablet in a glass of water

8. Energizing tablets and vitamins

I think this one is quite important for preparing for food shortages. You will need multivitamins, vitamin C, and other tablets. Every shop and every supermarket stocks them.

If we're lacking food, of course, we’ll do our best to eat as well as we can, but multivitamins and supplements will be really good to have. You don't have to spend a lot. Just do your research and you can find deals.

Alcohol based mouthwash

9. Mouthwash with alcohol

Listerine is an alcohol-based mouthwash. It's so unpredictable what could disappear off the shelves at the markets. One day it’s cold and flu tablets and then something else might disappear for whatever obscure reason. Mouthwash kills tons of germs which helps prevent you from getting sick.

Bars of soap

10. Soap

I'm not going to cover the basics of which soaps to buy, it's just important to stock up on soap.

If you can't afford to buy and stock up on liquid soap, buy bars of soap. They're cheaper and they last forever. They also take up far less space. Buy some soap bars, stack them in your towel cupboard, and let them sit there. You can get them pretty cheap at the moment.

Baking soda

11. Baking soda

Bicarbonate soda has so many cleaning purposes. It's also very affordable right now. I use it in combination with vinegar to clean my drains. I use it to clean the dishwasher as well. You can do a lot with it.

If things are bad and you can't access or run out of cleaning products for whatever reason, this is a good thing to have around. There are also home remedies and personal care products you can prepare with it.

Wet wipes

12. Wipes

In case of a lack of water, consider stocking up on baby wipes or makeup wipes. It doesn’t really matter what kind of wipes they are, as long as they have moisture. If there is no water, wipes will be very good to have for cleaning.

Seed packets

13. Seeds

Our aim as a family is to try to be as self-sufficient as possible. We have chickens, a garden, solar panels, and generators. I also like to stock up on seeds in case there is a lack of a certain vegetable we enjoy.

If you've never grown anything and you have the space for a garden, I strongly suggest you do some research. Think about what you like to eat and buy some seeds. You can pick them up off-season for a little bit cheaper.

If you don't have a garden, you can even grow a variety of vegetables in a pot on your windowsills.

If there are no fresh vegetables available you will want to be able to grow your own. Even if you grow a bunch of herbs on a windowsill, it would be a great addition to your supplies if something happens.

The best food to stockpile

I think that covers a lot of the nonfood essentials. I hope this has been helpful. Be sure to prepare now. You don’t want to wait till something happens or you will have less available to you.
