Want a fresh start in the new year? What better way to accomplish that than a good old decluttering session? I have a great declutter challenge for 2024 just waiting for you.

Here are 24 things that you can declutter to start 2024 off right.

1. Christmas decorations

Use the time that you are taking down your decorations to look through the bins and throw out the ones you have not used in the last couple of years. Next year, it will be that much easier to get the décor down from the attic.

2. Things that go against your New Year's goals or resolutions

We want to set ourselves up for success, so make sure you have nothing in your house tempting you to fail. If your goal is to eat less junk, consider emptying that snack cabinet.

3. Unwanted gifts

We all get presents for Christmas, and not all of them are to our liking. If you know that you have no use for a certain gift, go ahead and donate it – I am sure it will make someone else very happy.

4. Clothes

Do a quick audit of your clothing and get rid of the items that do not fit or ones you have not worn in the past year.

If you find items that are too small for you now, holding on to them in hopes of losing weight will only bring you feelings of frustration and guilt.

Instead, be motivated by the clean and clear space that you create – you can fill it with new items once you achieve your goal.

5. Time will tell bin

If you have ever used a minimalist technique of a "time will tell bin", I encourage you to go ahead and declutter the entire bin without even peeking inside.

6. Mid-year school supply check

Help your child go through their backpack, throwing out any old papers and unfit gear. Send them back to school for the remainder of the school year with some fresh supplies.

7. Office supplies

Free up some space and set yourself up with the things that you need to be most productive this new year, whether that is a brand new calendar, a planner for 2024, maybe some highlighters.

8. Medicine cabinet

Some pills or creams are probably past their expiration date – make sure to contact your local police station and find out where a drop box is, as medications should not be thrown directly into the trash can.

9. Online subscriptions

This is an excellent time to reassess which ones you have not been using, and readjust your budget accordingly.

10. Books

We all have our favorites that we want to read over and over again, but remember that so many new titles are coming out every day, so make some room for a few new exciting adventures to go on.

11. Electronics

Get rid of the cords, old versions and outdated gadgets that get all tangled up with the things that you actually use.

12. Whatever you have been planning on replacing

There are sales right now, maybe you have received some Christmas money, so the timing is right to switch out those old towels and kitchen tools for upgraded shiny new ones.

13. The outside of your fridge

All those pictures, magnets, shopping lists and notes tend to create a lot of visual clutter. Try clearing off your entire fridge and keeping it that way for one full month, and see how you feel.

14. Garden tools

In the winter you are probably not actively gardening, which makes it a great time to get rid of the backup items and the tools we do not like that much.

Workshop

15. Projects

Our to-do list tends to grow longer and longer, to the point where it starts to stress us out. Sit down with your spouse, decide what your priorities are, and declutter the projects you do not really care about.

16. Phone

There is so much we store on these little devices that slows them down. Take this opportunity to back up the important files and delete the unused ones.

17. Email inbox

Delete old emails, unsubscribe from things, put things in different categories.

18. Clutter that you store at someone else's home.

Most of us have things stored elsewhere, like childhood possessions at our parents’ house. Time has come to get those back and declutter them appropriately, as their home is not a free storage facility.

Organizing cutlery

19. Utensil or utility drawers

Clear everything out, give it a good wipe down, and only put back in the things that you want to keep there. The random items like sauce packets and plastic cutlery must go.

20. File cabinet

Seven years is a good rule of thumb for how long you should keep your paperwork, such as your taxes. Pull out that eighth year, shred it, and make space for new documentation.

21. Items that you forgot to return to the store

If you have missed the opportunity for a refund, it is a shame to have spent the money, but you still do not need the item. Do not keep it in your home out of guilt.

22. Games or puzzles

Games that you have not particularly enjoyed and are not planning to go back to any time soon should go right away. Only keep the ones that bring you pleasure.

Sweeping floor

23. Under your bed

Unless you live in very cramped quarters, you should not need to use the space under your bed as a storage space. It is difficult to access, there is lots of dust down there, and most likely whatever you store down there is not your most prized possession.

24. Purse or wallet

These little areas get packed, and we rarely go through them. Look for any expired reward cards, random notes, or anything else worth cleaning out.
