This Declutter Checklist for Bedrooms and Bathrooms is the first of 7 posts helping you jumpstart your decluttering process. This first Declutter Your Home Checklist includes 26 items commonly found in bedrooms and bathrooms that you can most likely discard and won’t miss! At the end of 7 weeks, you will have checklists of more than 150 items that you can toss! Think of it as a Decluttering Scavenger Hunt!
If you haven’t joined the Declutter Challenge yet, you can do that here. Once you join, you will receive:
- weekly emails with a decluttering checklist for specific areas of the home. With these checklists, I feel that I am on a Decluttering Scavenger hunt, which makes the whole process a wee bit more enjoyable!
- additional tips, suggestions, and resources for your successful decluttering
A declutter checklist is a great help when you just don’t know where to start decluttering! It prompts you to look for items that you might otherwise have overlooked and in the process, you will likely uncover other items that you realize you need to send off to a new home.
Before You Begin Decluttering:
Before you begin the process of decluttering your life, pop over to read the 10 Questions To Ask Yourself When Decluttering. These were questions I asked my sister-in-law when I was helping her recently.
Also, check out this list of Where to Donate and Recycle your Discards. It’s often helpful to know where your discards could go when deciding if an item is staying in your home or moving out to a new home.
Once you know where your items will go, label a bag or box which each destination. For example, with this checklist in hand, I tackled our bedrooms and bathrooms. I had bags labeled ‘TRASH’, ‘RECYCLE’, ‘Rx DISPOSAL’, ‘LION’S CLUB’, ‘CONSIGNMENT’, ‘GOODWILL’, and ‘HOMELESS SHELTER’.
You do you, but I find it helpful to get the stuff out of the house as quickly as possible to feel the sense of accomplishment I need to keep going. Some of you might prefer to do one big donation run; whatever works for you and motivates you.
Definitely put on your favorite music and have a rag and a spray bottle handy. While you are pulling things off of shelves and out of drawers, you might as well wipe them down!
And finally, keeping this quote front of mind helps me plow on through. My goal is to only have things in our home that inspire us, make us feel good, warm our hearts, or make our lives easier. If an item doesn’t quite check those boxes, it gets a good hard look.
Declutter Your Home Checklist
So, let’s get to the checklist.
As I mentioned earlier, I consider this checklist almost a Decluttering Scavenger Hunt! I find it helpful to be prompted to look for things and in the process of finding that ‘thing’, I typically unearth other items that need to be discarded.
A couple of notes about some of the items on this checklist. I mention your ‘third oldest pair of athletic shoes.’ Once the treads get worn on your athletic shoes it is usually time to replace them. But if you are anything like me, you will keep on to them to ‘work in the garden’. I find that I accumulate way too many ‘garden shoes’. Really, I only need one pair.
This may be TMI, but after too many years I finally figured out what pairs of underwear were really comfortable. I found myself sifting through my skivvies each day just looking for the comfy ones and bypassing the others. So, this year, I asked for several pairs of comfy undies for Christmas and trashed all the uncomfortable ones! Life is too short for underwear that constantly needs to be adjusted! AMIRIGHT?! The same holds true for bras!
Check out this post for recommended disposal dates for cosmetics.
Sunscreen loses its effectiveness after 3 years.
Dry Cleaners are usually happy to take wire hangers.
As you go through your clothing, turn ALL of your hangers backward. When you wear something, hang it back up the right way. One year from now you will clearly be able to see what you wore and what you didn’t which will make it easier for you to declutter your closet.
And let’s talk about those little hotel toiletries! If you want to add clutter quickly to your bathroom, then bring those babies home! But, I do know that homeless shelters welcome them. I know my mom brings them home with the intent of donating them, you just need to be disciplined about doing so.
With all that said, let the Decluttering Scavenger hunt begin! Pop back in with your successes or challenges! How many items were you able to check off of your list?

OMG, I was laughing -
Garden shoes? Yep
Underwear dilemma? Yep (bras too!)
Some things can be used differently- I saw a hack that I LOVE for sunglass cases and traveling. I use one for my phone charger cord- "no more tangles"! I also purchased a wall dispenser that attaches to the shower wall for shampoos, conditioner, body wash and a tray for soaps- I empty the hotel bottles into them and save alot of money that way!!! I rarely have to buy more now that it is just 2 of us!
