How to Update Your Home Decor: 12 Easy and Affordable Ideas

You don't need to spend money on updating home decor for fall and winter. I have some ideas for refreshing decor with things that you already have around the house.

Dried florals

1. Dried florals

I love dried florals that are added to eucalyptus wreaths.

Dried floral preservative

I collected flowers from my yard, trimmed them, and sprayed them with a dried floral preservative. I attached these to a grapevine wreath I already had without using glue or wire.

I also added a few dried wheat stems from my floral stash and a long strand of beads that I strung on a piece of twine.

3. Gold accents

Here I drew simple plant and flower drawings directly onto glass.

Drawing floral accents
I put the glass over the drawing and traced florals with a gold paint pen.

Adding paper
I inserted scrapbook paper behind the glass for visual interest.

Black accessories

4. Black accessories and updated florals

I love botanicals printed on black backgrounds.

Spray painting frame
I found an old picture frame and spray painted it black.

Applying Mod Podge to print

I applied Mod Podge on the frame and pressed the top ply of a napkin into place. I applied Mod Podge over that with a paintbrush to smooth the wrinkles.

I removed the center portion of the napkin with an X-Acto knife and sanded remnants.

Decorating frame
I love the vintage vibe.

5. Black and gold wall art

I created black and gold wall art with floral stencils.

Creating black and gold wall art
Using clear contact paper, I transferred a stencil to the frame’s hardboard backing and painted it black. I sponged on gold paint over the stencil.

Creating black and gold wall art
I applied two coats of paint and removed the stencil when it was dry. I put the hardboard back into the frame.

6. Velvet and lots of texture

I loved his $500 picture frame (top) from Bergdorf Goodman but I made one for less (bottom) with a simple tree image.

I cut and hot glued a velvet remnant around a cheap plastic frame. I cut a large X in the center of the frame. I folded and hot glued the excess pieces to the back of the frame.

7. More fuzzy texture

I purchased a fuzzy vest at Goodwill for $4. I cut and glued the fabric to the back of the frame and added a vintage Christmas tree card.

Textured pumpkin

8. Textured pumpkin

I used the fuzzy vest material to cover a Styrofoam pumpkin from Dollar Tree.

I love earthy colors like orangey browns and terracotta. I sprayed Zinsser primer on this lavender ceramic bird.

Painting candlestick
I also painted candlesticks.

Garden lime and water mix
I stirred up garden lime and water and brushed on a thin coat to the bird and candlesticks.
Rubbing bird
I rubbed off some of the dried liming mixture with a cloth to reveal the terracotta color.

Unpainted natural wood pumpkins

10. Unpainted natural wood

Natural wood tones are trending, too.

Painting
I brushed a citrus stripper on an old wood bowl, let it sit for an hour, then scraped off the varnish and stain.

Painting
Once it was scraped and cleaned, I rubbed it with linseed oil.

Adding handles
I drilled small holes on the sides and attached cabinet handles.

Adding pumpkins
I filled the bowl with cheap plastic pumpkins and gourds I painted with ivory chalk paint.

White pumpkins
I mixed a little baking soda in with the second coat of paint for texture. I hot glued plastic stems and leaves.

Golden owl

11. More gold accents

I jazzed up this white owl with primer and gold paint.
