Remove Everything and Clean the Shelves

First things first. Remove everything from your pantry and clean the shelves. You want to start with a blank slate.

As you remove the food from the shelves, toss anything that’s expired. Then group items so that they are easier to organize when you put them away.

Once the pantry is empty, clean the shelves and the floor thoroughly.

Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

If the paint is looking a little worn, add a fresh coat. This can make a world of difference.

A coat of white paint gives the area a fresh, clean look. Then you can add pops of color another way.

Mary from Boots & Hooves Homestead did this in her Farmhouse Kitchen Pantry post.

However, you can choose whatever color makes you happy. I found a bright green color in the samples section of my Home Depot, and it was just the right amount of paint for my pantry area.

Line the Shelves

One way to add color to your pantry is to use shelf liner. There are so many different colors to choose from.

You can find shelf liner at your local discount store, such as the Dollar Tree. You won’t have a big selection, but it’s a great price.

Purchase Baskets from the Dollar Tree

Speaking of the Dollar Tree, it is a must for baskets! You can find so many great baskets in a variety of shapes and sizes.

There are so many colors to choose from, but you can also find white, black, brown, and tan. There are also a number of other small containers that are great for everything from tea bags to plastic cutlery.

Buy Storage Containers in Various Sizes

It’s important to have a good set of storage containers. You do not want to skimp on these. You want to invest in good quality, airtight containers.

If you can afford to, buy glass containers. Plastic containers can leach chemicals into your food. If you do buy plastic containers, purchase those that are BPA-free. They come in all shapes and sizes.

Put Everything Away

Canned and boxed items are easy to group and shelf. Items that are in bags can be more difficult. That’s where baskets and storage containers come in handy.

For example, bags of flour, cornmeal, rice, or beans can be stored in glass containers to preserve their freshness and make them easier to find.

Add an Inventory Board

Last, but not least, you want to add an inventory board. This can be as simple as paper and a clipboard or it can be a dry erase board.

You want to keep up with what’s in your pantry so that you know when it’s time to rebuy. An inventory sheet also makes it easier to plan your menu for the week.

Danielle at Project Meal Plan suggests a Pantry Clean Out Challenge where you use up what's left in your pantry to save money and avoid over-buying.

Your pantry doesn’t have to be a room you hide from your guests. You can have a pantry that is organized and pretty without spending a lot of money. Have fun with your pantry makeover!
