Never had a minimalist experience of your own and wondering what living a minimalist life is really all about? Dawn from The Minimal Mom has been doing just that for the past 8 years, and she’s happy to share everything she’s discovered along the way.

Through trial and error—and plenty of ups and downs—learning how to live a minimalist life you’ll enjoy is right at your fingertips. And Dawn’s helpful advice will get you there.

After making a rather rash decision due to feeling so overwhelmed as a mom, Dawn jumped head first into her new minimalist lifestyle.

She started the decluttering process by asking herself the following questions: are we currently using this item and do we know for sure we’ll need this item within the next year? If those answers were a resounding no, she got rid of those items for good.

For items worth $50 or more, Dawn recommends selling them online through Craigslist. For items worth less than $50, she recommends donating them or throwing them away to save you time and keep up your momentum.

To get her husband on board with the new lifestyle, she completed many of the decluttering projects on her own and only told him about it once he could actually see some results. That encouraged him to do the same decluttering project with his personal items as well, without feeling any hesitation.

Decluttering your home

Still unsure whether a minimalist life is right for you? Dawn says even though she questioned it from time to time, she realized that she didn’t miss having so much stuff lying around, didn’t miss cleaning the whole house before guests came over, and didn’t miss spending so much money on material items.

If Dawn’s minimalist experience tells you anything, it’s that your life will get simpler once you commit to the minimalist lifestyle.
