A cabin in the woods is a dream for many, but a reality for very few. And that’s because people tend to get stuck living in a cycle of consumerism and busyness.

Wanting to escape that typical routine and lifestyle, a man who calls himself the Canadian Castaway took building a DIY cabin straight out of his dreams and made it his new reality. Now living off the grid full time, he has created the lifestyle he always dreamed of and more.

Some of the off-grid living ideas he incorporated into his new home include utilizing both the rain and energy from the sun to meet all of his cooking, cleaning, and living needs. And all of the features in his self-built cabin contribute to making his life more functional and more enjoyable at the very same time.

What does a typical day look like for him?

Picture staring off at a beautiful horizon, chopping wood for the fire, shoveling snow away from the solar panels, and using a tractor to clear the road. Other chores that are a necessary part of living in this DIY cabin include bringing the kindling in, making sure the water tank is full, and working in his office.

Each year, renovations are made to suit his lifestyle as he learns more about himself and lives in the woods all year long. From upgrading the solar electric system to rearranging the living room, small changes make a big impact on his DIY cabin.

With a bicycle hanging from the ceiling, an RV pedal toilet stationed in the bathroom, and a cat running through the loft space, the Canadian Castaway himself has surely made this DIY cabin his home. And after 6 years of living in it, he doesn’t intend to be moving out anytime soon.
