Have you ever thought about what it would be like to build a tiny house? If so, you are not alone.

After Vickie lost her home and all of her belongings in the Christchurch Earthquake of 2011, she relocated to Queensland, Australia, and did exactly that. She wondered if a tiny house was right for her then she went ahead and built one for herself. And her earthquake rebuild project is what helped her see what truly matters in life.

Vickie lost her house in the Christchurch earthquake

The first step for Vickie was to find a gorgeous property to rent. She was able to find one in a beautiful location and is now surrounded by several alternative housing options including other tiny houses, container homes, cottages, and even a bus.

Plus, the owner of the property planted a permaculture farm and invited members of the community to take training courses and grow their own food alongside an outdoor-inspired yoga studio and a treatment room for massages or acupuncture treatments.

As far as building a tiny house goes, Vickie says it was all about deciding what she really needed and finding the right builder to make that happen.

How much does it cost to build a tiny house? Well, that really depends on what you want in a tiny house and what things you can actually live without. Vickie says with a full custom build and all the crazy little touches she added to it, she’s all in for about $150,000.

That’s not a bad idea for many people—build a tiny house of your dreams and still spend a much smaller amount than you would for a regular-sized house in that location. Plus, Vickie gets to enjoy all the beautiful architectural features of her home as well as the amenities her local community provides.

I think your home is absolutely beautiful! I always think those tny homes don't offer much security but you are in an area with many others, good neighbors, very safe area. Not doable where I am but I admire your garden, outdoor seating, everything lovely. So glad you have gotten thru that earthquake & are doing so well.
