How to Get Rid of Stuff and Why You Should

If you still have not tried doing a minimalist declutter in your house, I bet you have tons of unnecessary things in your house, and they are weighing you down.

It is time for you to live an unbothered and happy life, and in order to do that, you should start getting rid of stuff. Why? Let’s talk about it.

1. Money

Money causes a lot of problems in this world and it really should not be that way. We live in a time when many people buy a ridiculous amount of things that they do not actually need and do not bring them happiness and only create more problems.

Deciding which things to get rid of will save you a lot of money because it makes you extra conscious about what you bring in your house. If you have just decluttered twenty sweaters, you are unlikely to buy five new ones on your next shopping trip. If you have decided to get rid of them, then clearly you do not need them.

Moreover, you will realize that you are not just the stuff that you own. You are already lovely and complete, without any of your possessions, and this understanding is priceless.

I used to spend a ton of money every year on beauty products, thinking that it would make me happy. WRONG! I did get excited about all the new releases and I would have a fun day shopping with a friend, but in the end it made me miserable.

I was insecure about myself, could not go out without putting on makeup and did not feel beautiful in my own skin. Not only that, my skin got worse, and obviously it was not great for my bank account. Now I like to keep that money in my pocket and I like to sit on it.

2. Confidence

Decluttering your things can be really hard, because you are confronted with all the decisions you have made in your past.

However, decluttering will also give you a lot of self-knowledge. What are your priorities right now in life? What are the things you want to accomplish? What are the things that you are willing to put your attention and your energy into? And what are things that are not worth spending your attention and your energy on?

There are only 24 hours in a day, so you have to spend your energy wisely. Although decluttering might seem daunting, once you have tackled the decluttering part, you will feel like you have got your life together.

And let me tell you, you have. This is what will truly be a huge source of confidence, which always shows. Once you have decluttered, it is likely that you have your priorities straight in life. You know what you want and you are probably less concerned about what others will think of you. Therefore, instead of trying to impress them, you will just do your own thing and feel peaceful.

3. Time

Decluttering initially takes you a lot of time, but once you are done, you will have a lot of extra time on your hands to do things that you really enjoy. All the things you have in your house need tending from time to time: at some point, they will need cleaning, maintenance, even throwing them in the garbage takes time. This is not a wise use of your mental energy and time. It is amazing to live in a house that is tidy, easy to clean and easy to maintain and to have extra time. It is up to you to decide what deserves your time and energy and what does not.

4. Quality over quantity

Because of the money you have saved by not buying unnecessary stuff, you will now be able to afford quality items over poorly made items.

If you choose things that are better quality, it will be a joy to use. By choosing quality over quantity, you will end the cycle of buying something cheap, having it not fit or not work properly, having it break too early and then having to buy something new again.

You do not have to go out and buy all expensive things right now, but when something that you use regularly breaks, try to replace it with something high quality that is a joy to use and that you will love.

Buying second hand

I recommend trying to find your things second hand, since it is both more eco-friendly and way cheaper. If you still think that second hand things are gross, think of it this way.

There are two types of things in the world: things that are entirely new and in store and second hand things. The moment you walk out of the store, the thing you have just purchased instantly becomes a second hand item. So buying second hand is not gross. Most of the time people will sell good things second hand on the internet, which is a win-win situation: you will spend less money and planet earth will thank you for it.
